Up-Do

My niece, Sydney, had her birthday party recently at a salon. All of the girls had their hair and nails done and had quite the experience along the way. Paige, Elle and I crashed the party so the girls could have their hair done, too.

Pretty darn sure that's Adam Lambert doing Paige's hair.She adjusted to a pampered lifestyle a little too easily.Ali and the other girls were introduced to the city's more colorful side.Elle was surprisingly patient during the hour that it took to have her hair done. The girl said that she did ask a couple of times, "Are you done yet?!?"Winner for cutest up-do.Beautiful girlies!

Mom & Me

Elle and I take a little 'Mom & Me' dance class. Originally, I had signed her up for her own little class, but it became clear (when she faked that she was sick and clung to my leg) that she wasn't quite ready for that step yet. So we started a class together and she fell in love with the whole thing. And I am becoming quite the little dancer myself. :)

Snapshot at 9pm

(Totally pirating this idea from my sisters, one of whom already stole it from the other. Thanks, chicas.)

* Mike -- comfy in his jammies in bed watching some kind of sports show. In his happy place.

* Misty -- sitting at the computer, catching up on others' blogs and updating my own, craving ice cream for my sore throat, anticipating crawling into bed and somehow convincing Mike that he really wants to watch a DVR'd show or two with me.

* Christian -- just home from scouts ("It was so fun tonight!" since it was all about karate), bummed that his basketball team lost their game tonight (but still somehow insists that he played a great game -- he's semi-delusional about his basketball skills), playing games on my iPhone while laying in bed.

* Haley -- finishing up homework in bed, anxious to also finish up The Lightning Thief since she's itching to beat me to book 2 in the series, loving that she finally has her own room ("Finally some privacy!"), planning out her outfit for school on Monday so it will match her cool new glasses.

* Paige -- the only child in the house peacefully sleeping, dreaming about show & tell at school tomorrow and all of the new words she can read now.

* Elle --sitting in my lap, out of bed for the 3rd time (we need to stop letting her take long afternoon naps, apparently), wearing adorable pink monkey jammies, continually smelling my freshly cut & styled hair and saying, "Mmmmm, mommy -- you smell yummy."; keeps telling me that she can hear dinosaurs upstairs in our house.

Family Togetherness

How does the old saying go? "The family who cheers for the Utes together stays together!"(My extended family will seriously disagree, but there you go.)

My Happy List

* blog comments

* Elle angrily calling her siblings, "Punk!"

* Playing pretend with Elle ("You the queen, I the princess.")

* Christian's pride (and fear) in being so close to earning his black belt. The 5 hour black belt test is scaring him already.

* holiday decor

* a good book (lately The Lightning Thief series, the Outlander series, The Boy in Striped Pajamas)

* The world wide web, and all that entails.

* Avatar. Loved it. 3 times.

* Mani/pedi's -- sometimes done professionally by someone else, most of the time done by me while watching a good movie.

* Going to choir with Haley and hearing her successfully picking out the alto part.

* A cold, 32 oz. fountain Diet Coke. I quit for awhile but am now happily back on the wagon.

* Watching Paige dance; having each of her 3 teachers separately tell me how talented she is.

Family history

My brother has been scanning old family pictures recently and sent me a few. A little journey through time ...

This first one is of my mom and dad (mom sitting on the piano bench, dad standing in the back holding me - sucking away on my thumb), my aunt and uncle and various cousins (all on the left side - Uncle Pat is holding Erin, for those of you who know her) and other cousins who I haven't seen in years. Kind of fun to see the family looking so young!This is when my mom graduated from nursing school. I am sporting the lovely glasses, in case you couldn't tell. I was 9 years old, which makes Quinn 13, Erin 11 and Kelly 7.And here we are welcoming Quinn home from his mission. Not much emotion on any of our faces, huh? :)I know I sound like an old lady when I say this but time seriously flies! Was that last picture really 20 years ago? Have I really had 4 kids since then?

Mike and I went to a funeral today of a woman in our ward who was almost 102 years old. As her family talked about her long life, I kept thinking "Will I live that long? Will I live to see as many huge changes as she did?" I almost hope not, if I don't have a healthy body but still ... I can't imagine what the rest of my life will bring, how many ups and downs, heartbreaks and triumphs, successes and failures. Looking back over these old pictures, though, I'm grateful for the ride and the life experience that comes along the way. I'm grateful I'm not still 9 or 17 like in these pictures. I'm grateful for the here and now and the possibility that lies beyond....

Quality time

We've had a lot more quality time with our Farley cousins (Quinn's kids) than we have had in far too long. Funny how you can live relatively close to family and get so caught up in your own life that you rarely see each other. Not anymore, thankfully. We've been having regular Sunday dinners together.

Nothing brings a family together like ... Rock Band.Seriously Grant, you look like a rockstar with those shades!Julia experienced the leg cramp that comes with playing the Rock Band drums.The little girlies spent the entire night in the toy room. At least, we thought they had until we discovered Haley's candy stash had been raided...That is a look of sheer bliss on Quinn's face -- a daddy's heaven.

The Golden Rule

You know the Golden Rule .... "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you." The Golden Rule of Christmas is "Give unto others what you wish you'd have given to you." At least, what I wish I'd gotten as a kid. Case in point: the Easy Bake Oven.I had always wanted one as a kid. The commercials seemed so cool -- you could make tiny little cakes and cookies in your very own oven!

Thankfully, my girls thought it was just as cool as I did when they received it for Christmas. From me. :)

Runaway

Paige is my little drama queen. From very early on, her little attitude was very apparent.Sometimes Paigie has little tantrums over seemingly minor things. This particular tantrum was because she didn't want to wear that t-shirt over the top of her cute tracksuit (we were going to walk in a 5k and had to wear the shirt).Over the past couple of weeks, Paige has "run away" twice because of 2 random, minor things. By "run away," I mean that she puts on her coat in a huff, announces "Fine! I'm running away then!" and heads outside. She stands on the sidewalk for a minute and then walks very slowly down a few houses. Eventually, she'll turn back around and slowly make her way back home. Good stuff.

Her reasons for running away are what crack me up:
• She had just proudly finished her homework packet in record time. I looked over it with her to make sure everything looked ok, praising her work but also pointing out 2 little corrections. That was all it took ... she was out the door, saying that her homework was ruined.

• After Paige tried on a new pair of pants that were clearly too big for her, I said, "You are so petite!". She was instantly ruffled so I explained, "Oh honey, being petite is a good thing! It just means that you have a cute little body." She said, "But I'm the tallest kid in my class so I'm NOT petite!!" and then stomped out the door.

I'm a little worried about times ahead, say when she's 16, has access to a car and then decides that her parents are so unfair! for whatever little reason. Her runaway excursions might not be so cute then....

Christian

Christian is a pretty cool kid. I'm supposed to think so since I'm his mom, right? But he keeps surprising me with the little things he says or does, and he keeps a smile on my face - most of the time, anyway.

Over the last month, he did 3 things in particular that I thought were pretty cool:

* He competed in his school's Storytelling Festival and took 2nd place in his grade. He participated in the Festival last year, which made sense considering how he loves to weave a good tale (not unlike his dad) but I was also a little surprised that he chose to do it. How many other boys choose to give up their recess to go practice storytelling? But I was blown away last year and this year as I watched him up on stage, theatrically telling scary stories. He even wrote his own story this year, without any help from us at all. He wouldn't even practice telling his story to Mike or me because he wanted us to be totally surprised. And we definitely were, pleasantly so. He did a great job.

* Christian's class put on two class plays for their parents. The kids apparently directed themselves, did the costuming and props themselves and carried out the whole production themselves. The day before the play was to be performed, his teacher sent an e-mail to the parents letting us know the place and time .... and that was the first I had ever heard about it. When I asked Christian about the play, he said, "Oh yeah, we're doing 'Where The Wild Things Are' and I'm Max." Hello? And he didn't mention it to his parents? Sure enough, Mike and I were totally surprised watching him be the lead in the play, recite all of his lines perfectly and play a great Max.

* A few weeks ago, Christian arrived at the start of Primary and realized he was supposed to give a 3 minute talk. He had forgotten about it and I had never even known about it. When he admitted to his teacher that he had forgotten, she said, "Well, why don't you just give your testimony then?" He said, "No, that's o.k. I'll give a talk." And then proceeded to stand up and give a 3 minute impromptu talk. His teacher told me that she wouldn't have known that he hadn't totally prepared one if Christian hadn't told her. He opened his talk with a story, tied it into a gospel teaching and finished with his testimony. And again, Christian never mentioned anything to us about it until over a week later.

I guess the theme here is that Christian is an independent, competent young man. I'd like to think that he needs his parents to show him the way but he keeps proving that he's doing just fine on his own. I'm excited to see what he does next that surprises us ... hopefully pleasantly so. :}

Graduation

Elle "graduated" today from our church's nursery class to the 3 year old Sunbeam class. It all sounded so exciting initially .... to get to go with the big kids to Primary and even help mommy with Primary stuff! But the magic quickly wore off for her as she realized that Primary really meant that she had to sit quietly in her chair and listen to the lesson. Yes, she loved singing time and class time but I could see her little mind turning as she wondered where the happy days of nursery had gone. No more play time? No more Cookie Grandma (the sweet grandmas in our ward who take treats to the nursery kids and read them stories)?

Part of the way through Primary, I knelt down next to Elle and hugged her. She said, "Mom, I don't wanna be a Sunbeam anymore. Let's go play in nursery." I know, baby. Thankfully, she has two wonderful new teachers so I'm not worried about her at all. She'll be just fine. It's the start of her growing up, though. She'll be starting preschool in the fall and then I'll be the one whining and saying, "I don't want you to be a preschooler yet! Let's go home and play." Help.
